Game over. The white flag is raised. Yet again we the fans suffered through another loss and butt whooping. I just don’t get it. We are the freaking Chicago Bears; rich in history. The Bears are a storied and prideful franchise. Hell, our first coach and owner, the great George Halas has his fingers prints all over the entire game of football. Chicago… the second largest market in the NFL with its team valued at over $1.7 billion dollars. Yet since the turn of THIS century the Bears have made the playoffs four times and none in the last five years. How shitty. Downright embarrassing. No offense to other cities but we aren’t the Browns, Raiders, Titians, or Bills. We aren’t a doormat for the league. We deserve much better than this. There is no reason we can’t be in the same breath of New England, the Colts, or my second favorite team the Pittsburg Steelers. The team should be in the playoff hunt each year. It should have an identity. It should have strong leaders a la a great Owner, Head Coach, GM, and QB (crap at this point I’d settle for one). Even after all that it feels like the McCaskey Family sleeps better than us. WE care more about the team than the “first daughter,” Virginia Halas McCaskey. And it is quite evident her son, George McCaskey knows nothing about pro football. The jig is up. You have all personally ruined the team long enough. Sell the damn team already. If there is a Santa out there then please bring us this wonderful gift to Chicago – new owners who know the game and show passion! We’ll promise to never ask anything again. Okay, maybe Aaron Rodgers in a Bears uniform too. In the meantime here is my way to improve the team now.
Clean House: I am sure many may not agree but I say keep Phil Emery. In my eyes he made two bad decisions. Drafting Shea Mcclellin and hiring Marc Trestman. Yes, I know he is the person who gave Cutler the contract. But you know another team would have offered that contract and probably even more money. No one saw this Cutler coming. All the talk has been he is now putting the time in the film room. He’s trying to be more vocal and a leader. Last season gave us hope. And it would have been our luck he signs elsewhere and becomes a Pro Bowler. Phil is too detailed, smart, and honest not to at least be given a shot to right the ship. However, Marc Trestman needs to go. The B.S. of having a “great week of practice” after a horrible lost is unacceptable. The team seems to always be outcoached and outplayed. Even the team under Lovie Smith never quit like they do now. I still say the truly great teams have a head coach that players not only respect but also fear. A head coach should inspire you. A head coach should teach should make you a better player: Bill Belichick, Harbaugh brothers, Tom Coughlin, Marvin Lewis come to mind. Here is clip on how a great head coach acts – http://ow.ly/GfRDp . All the coaches need to go especially Mel Tucker.
Get a new QB: The end of the line has to be here. All the excitement we had back in 2009 after the trade is now gone. Jay, you never lived up to your potential. You shortchanged us. If you were HALF the quarterback of Rodger or Brees we wouldn’t even have this discussion. But just like Peter Pan you never grew up and developed. Six years later you STILL remind me of a pitcher who can throw 98-100 mph but lacks movement on his pitches and bad decision making (Kyle Farnsworth anyone). Yes, you’ll have great games. But never consistent enough to be considered one of the greats. You give us more heart ache than happiness. With all talent on the offensive side, swallow your pride and be a game manager. We’d gladly take 220 yards and 2 TDs rather than your 350 yards 3 TDs 2 Interceptions and 1 Fumble type of game. You still try squeezing a ball into triple coverage. You still have bad footwork. You still kill drives and cost us games with your turnovers. Your body language inspires nobody. Yes, you are talented. Yes, you are rough as hell. But this relationship isn’t working anymore – if it ever did, let’s be honest. You have proven yourself not to be able to lead this franchise to the promise land. It is the Bears best interest to trade you, cut you, demote you to starting hot dog vendor, whatever it takes so that you are not our QB next season. The Bears likely will have a top 10 draft pick this year. They seriously need to consider drafting a QB.
Fix the Defense: The defensive line has shown improvement. If Ferguson and Sutton keep growing they should be even better next year and are still very young. Stephen Paea and Willie Young have been bright spots and shown good potential. And when healthy I wouldn’t bet against Jared Allen. The linebackers have been a huge disappointment for me. It was tough seeing Briggs go down but thought it was a great opportunity for Jon Bostic. He has not shown much since the pre-season during his rookie year. He way too often gets fooled and tricked. The big hits we thought we would see have not been there. Bostic was billed as the next great linebacker. However, he is at best a good fourth option LB. This position is glorified here. This person should be the face of the defense. We need to add Justin Houston as a free agent. He is a top young player, at 26, and leads a strong defense in KC. Next is safety. Honestly, we have not found an answer since Mike Brown retired (damn I miss that man, he embodied the heart and soul on those bears team). We need to trade for Rahim Moore (24 years old), the safety for the Denver Broncos. He is big, physical, smart football IQ. The Bears need to begin thinking young.
Let’s hope for big changes this offseason because if the team chooses to keep most of the players and coaches then next season will be just as awful. I leave you with this last question and nugget. Do you know what the definition of insanity is? It is when you keep doing the same thing over and over… and expect different results. From my standpoint the Chicago Bears have been doing the same shit for 30 years since the last Super Bowl win. Let’s pray spring cleaning comes early in Chicago.
